Trains at Cagliari Airport
There is no railway at Cagliari Airport but the bus and train stations in Cagliari are 200 yards apart and are located in the centre of the town near the port. Cagliari Trenitalia train station is on the opposite side of the road to the ARST bus station in the central Piazza Matteotti.
Trains run from here to Iglesias (1hour 30 minutes) and Carbonia (1 hour 15 minutes) in the southwest, while the main line proceeds northwards as far as Sassari (just over 4 hours) and Porto Torres via the towns of Oristano (just under 5 hours) and Macomer. A branch line from Chilivani heads out for Olbia ( four hours) and Golfo Aranci.
The train connects Cagliari to Arbatax in the south and Sassari to Palau in the north. It is well worth making the trip from Macomer to Bosa Marina where the train winds its way through some spectacular Sardinian landscape until it reaches the sea near the coastal town of Bosa on the west of the island.
Cagliari Airport Trains
The FdS train station for trains travelling north to Dolianova, Mandas and Isili is on Piazza Repubblica. In the summer, the Trenino Verde scenic service operates several routes in this area.
If you look at a map of the railway in Sardinia it is in the shape of a huge Y with the main route beginning in Cagliari and running to Chillivani via Oristano. The line eventually divides with one line going to Sassari and Porto Torres and the other to Olbia and Golfo Aranci. We have also written an article on trains in Sardinia
