Trains in Sardinia

Sardinia has a few major train lines and some private, narrow-gauge trains and tourist routes operated by the Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS).The trains tend to be slow in Sardinia but they are a good way to travel if you want to take your time and see the spectacular scenery.

Tickets are available in the FdS stations, bars and tobacconists. Cagliari train station is opposite side to the ARST bus station in the central Piazza Matteotti.

Travelling by train is the next best option in Sardinia after hiring a car. The rail network covers most of the island and standard trains run from Cagliari to Sassari in the northwest, and from there they connect to Alghero. Trains from Sassari also serve Olbia and Nuoro is accessible via Macomer.

The tourist train services are popular and include the summer Sassari to Tempio service and the Little Green Train which is a single track railway which covers the entire island. The train connects Cagliari to Arbatax in the south and Sassari to Palau in the north. The trip from Macomer to Bosa Marina is highly commended as the train winds its way through the typical Sardinian landscape to reach the sea near the coastal town of Bosa on the west of the island. The Italian railway system Trenitalia is the most modern network and connects the largest towns, the main ports and the Italian peninsula with Train Ferries powered by diesel locomotives.
